On Christmas morning, prolong the mystery under the wrapping paper by introducing a Christmas scavenger hunt for kids. There are a few ways to do this. The simplest way is to come up with some riddles for each clue. If you want to make it a bit harder, the clues could be word jumbles or pictograms. If you want yo get really ambitious, run string or yarn through the house, backtracking and going into different rooms, with the end of the string leading to a present.

If your family has an Elf on the Shelf, he or she might "help" with clues in a scavenger hunt. Those silly elves like to get into all sorts of mischief. Maybe the elf could hide and leave clues where the kids can find him. Maybe the elf could leave a treat like a snowflake cookie or ornament for the tree, or play a trick like hiding Daddy's car keys or everyone's left shoe. On Christmas Eve, the elf could hide special pajamas for opening presents the next morning.

A Christmas scavenger hunt for kids is a great activity for a neighborhood party. More houses means more clues and treats. Each house could have a different theme, like the North Pole or Santa's reindeers, with corresponding clues and prizes. The hunt could end with hot chocolate and cookies for everyone. Be sure there are adults to help the kids cross the street, if necessary, and stay safe.

If you don't want to write riddles or rhyming clues, use photographs instead. Take a bunch of close-up pictures of items. The participants have to figure out what each item is so they can find it and go to the next clue. You can also flip this idea and give the kids a list of objects (snowman, holly, wreath, etc.) and ask them to take a picture of each item on the list. Prizes can be given out for fastest, most items and most creative.

Have fun with themes and gifts. For a "North Pole" theme, clues could include Santa and Mrs. Claus, elves and presents. Make reindeer cookies with sugar cookies, chocolate-covered mini pretzels for antlers, and brown and red chocolate candies for eyes and noses. The winning prize could be the dvd of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. A "Winter Wonderland" theme could have puzzles about snowmen, ice skating and icicles. Kids can warm up drinking white hot chocolate and munching snowflake cookies. The winner could get a copy of "Frosty the Snowman".

A Christmas scavenger hunt is a wonderful addition to your holiday traditions. It's a great way to make memories and share laughter with friends and family. For coming together is truly the spirit of the season.
